sir,

With reference to my despatch No.66 of the

22nd.ultimo concerning three applications by Grant-in-aid

Schools for Building Grants I desire to make the following

alterations and to add some further explanations,

2. The amount available for Building Grants in

the current year is roughly $5,200. This is made up of the sum

actually voted for this purpose, viz., $3,000 and the balance

available from the Grant-in-aid Vote after paying the grants

earned by the Schools at the Annual Examination.

3. In making his recommendations as to the

amount to be paid the Inspector of Schools divided this sum

proportionately between the three Schools. But under Rule 27

(2) of the Code the grants are not to exceed one half of the

actual cost". This will probably amount to $1,500 for the Church

Missionary Society School at Yaumati,$2,100 for the Basel Mis-

sion at Shamshuipo and $63 for the Italian Convent, making a total of $3,663. I recommend therefore that in each case full

grants of half the actual cost be made. After payment of them

there will still remain, after exhausting the ordinary Grant
